Everyone in isolation needs a friend

Everyone has a wound they want to mend

Everyone who’s graceless needs a prayer

And everyone who’s silent has a story to share

Everything that starts as a comedy

will always end as a tragedy

I gave my heart to this movement

But with things like love, I’m very insouciant

And everyone has their own choice of drug

And everyone who’s desperate needs a hug

Everybody wants another day to live before they leap

And everyone takes forever to fall asleep

Running and dying is easy

I give away my love and my love relieves me

We all have our reasons why we run

We all have our ghosts we’re running from

And I can see the moon and the tides

I can see the waters in your eyes

And I can see your shadow is getting lost

I left the bride at the altar when I married the cause

Everyone in isolation needs a friend

Everyone has a wound they want to mend

Everyone who’s graceless needs a prayer

And everyone who’s silent has a story to share

Now I know what it means to die

When I said I’d save you, I knew it was a lie

What haunts me at night is that look on your face

So I left a cross for you in the High Desert, to brighten the place

Running and dying is easy

I give away my love and my love relieves me

Everything that starts as a comedy ends as a comic monologue

but we’re not laughing anymore

I wrote this piece with the permission of the Dominguez-Valdivia family whose family member Fernando Dominguez died while in ICE custody at the Adelanto Detention Center in March 2012.
