Can I Speak? (Poetry)

By Bryan Leonardo Fiallos

My name is Bryan and I am a senior attending Humboldt State University, majoring in Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The problem of immigration has only but recently come to my attention and how the media makes our people look criminal when they want to but make us look good at other times. None of this came to my mind until our school had our annual Social Justice Summit. This year our emphasis was, Give Our Dream A Chance!

Can I Speak?

How do you expect me to speak,
When every time
I try to speak, you
Shut
Me
Down.

How do you expect me to speak,
When every time
I try to speak, you
Throw
Insults
At
Me.

How do you expect me to speak,
When every time
I try to speak, you
Find
Something
Wrong
With
Me.

How do you expect me to speak,
When every time
I try to speak, you
Teach
Me
Silence.

Let me Speak
